2006 Women`s Championship to be Held in Australia

South Australia`s capital city Adelaide will host the 2006 Asian Football Confederation Women`s Championships this upcoming July. The event will be held for 2 weeks starting on July 15. Nine teams, including the Australian one, will compete for a place at the 2007 FIFA Women`s World Cup.

The event, to be held at Hindmarsh Stadium and the Marden Sports Complex, is expected to attract more than 500 players, officials and the media. Australian Major Events, the major events arm of the South Australian Tourism Commission, and the Office for Recreation and Sport, have teamed up with the Football Federation Australia, to bring this event to the capital city.

The opportunity to host this major world event during Adelaide?s winter months will provide significant economic benefit for the State, says Bill Spurr, Chief Executive, South Australia Tourism Commission. He added that securing this new event is part of the State Government?s overall strategy to attract more events, particularly during the winter period.
