Lacrosse increasing while baseball declining?
The youth of America are no longer picking up a baseball bat and ball but are picking up a different stick and ball - that of lacrosse. This Native American sport is catching on among our youth. The youth are finding the excitement and thrill of learning and playing this action packed game.
The largest increase has been among high school girls where the number of participants has tripled in the last decade. The number of boys playing the game has doubled during the same period. A sport played typically on the East Coast is now seeing youth programs popping up in large and small communities in the rest of the country. With more and more sons and daughters wanting to play it leaves most parents wanting to know more about the sport. Most have heard of the game but dont have a clue as to how it is played, the rules, what equipment is needed and what will it cost to start playing.
The game is a combination of hockey, soccer and basketball. Since lacrosse has a faster pace than soccer, more available playing fields than hockey, the sport has caught on among the nation`s youth. Many are opting out of football, baseball and basketball to play. Lacrosse is generally played outdoors during the spring and summer. With increased interested and numbers the sport has moved indoors during the autumn and winter seasons. The main goal of the game is to score points by throwing and catching a rubber ball with sticks that have nets among teammates. A score is made when a player shoots the ball past the goalie into the 6x 6 goal. The team with the most scores at the end of the game is the winner.
