Coach K to Lead Olympic Squad

For the first time since 1992 the USA Men Basketball team will be lead by a coach who hasn?t coach a professional team. Earlier this week, Coach Mike Krzyzewski was named as the new head coach of the USA Basketball Men`s Senior National Team from 2006-2008. After the last year?s debacle at the Olympic Games, the USA Basketball committee is going in different direction, hoping that it will yield different results.

Is Krzyzewski the right man for the job? Absolutely yes! The biggest trouble facing USA Basketball is adjusting to the European game when playing in these tournaments. In this regard, Krzyzewski is perfect for the job given that college is much more similar to European basketball than professional basketball.

Judging by past experience, the influx of European players and the insertion of zone defense have not done enough to make American players more accustomed to the European style of play. A college coach will instill some of the fundamentals that got lost along the way.
