Hawks Not Ready to Soar Just Yet
With training camp opening today we decided to review of each team, what they did over the summer and what are their playoffs chances this year. Today we?ll cover the Atlanta Hawks, a team that was making a lot of headlines over the summer. The team has added some key players to the mix, giving their roster more versatility and athleticism. But will it be enough to compete for a playoff spot in the tough eastern conference?
In my opinion the Hawks made a mistake in draft night taking Marvin Williams with the second pick. Even though he is 6-9, Williams weighs only 230 pounds, which is not strong enough to play the power forward position. Given his physic, Williams is more suited to play the small forward, but Atlanta already has budding star Joe Smith playing that spot.
The Hawks also overpaid to get Joe Johnson, but I?m too critical of this particular move, because overpaying is the only way to get free agents to come to Atlanta. What I?m critical of is the Hawks misguided notion that they can play Johnson at the point guard position. In conclusion, the Hawks will improve on last season, but I don?t think that will be enough to secure a playoff spot.
