Less Than Super Sonics

Many had written the Sonics off even before the season started. Now that that there are 5-8, many are pointing fingers to Sonics GM Rick Sund for doing enough to strengthen the team over the offseason. I don?t think he should be criticized for letting Jerome James go, and I also think that letting Antonio Daniels go was a smart move. You don?t want to pay that much to a backup point guard.

Fans have called for the head of coach Bob Weiss and the resignation of everyone from GM Rick Sund to the team?s dance choreographer. However they should take comfort in the fact that the Sonics are only one and a half games away from sitting atop the Northwest Division, a spot they occupied all last season when they were the talk of the league. To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of their death have been greatly exaggerated.

On the other hand, Seattle does have a number of issues to address. For starters, they recently lost to a Lakers squad missing Kwame Brown, Devean George, Slava Medvedenko and Luke Walton and a Jazz team missing Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harping and Keith McLeod. To make matters worse, their 5-7 record is the envy of only the Atlanta Hawks.
