Freshman Quarterback Impresses in First Game

Rudy Carpenter is Arizona State?s new starting quarterback. The freshman had an impressive outing on Saturday, throwing for 401 yards and three TD passes in his first collegiate start. With their 44-20 victory over Washington, the Sun Devils ended a three-game losing streak.

Matt Miller was the recipient of all three touchdown passes, going for 12, 69 and 10 yards. Miller, who is in his senior year, had five catches for a career-high 139 yards. Derek Hagan caught nine passes for 115 yards, moving him to 3rd place in the Pac-10 in career receptions with 236 yards.

After the game Miller commented, ?Those were some of the best passes I?ve had in my career here?. They were right there. I don?t know what it is with Rudy, but he was just throwing perfect balls tonight. Carpenter? 401 yards were second-most by a freshman quarterback in Arizona State history. ?I was just trying to complete passes wherever I could?, Carpenter said.
