Yanks at the top of American League East

After struggling for much of the 2005 season the New York Yankees are back where they feel they deserve to be, at the top of the American League Eastern Division, just half a game in front of the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. This is the first time since April the "Bronx Bombers" have held such a position, after months of losses and meetings with owner George Steinbrenner dismayed Yanks fans.

The Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 11-10 on Monday night at Arlington. New York won for the 11th time in 13 games and improved to a season-high nine games over .500 at 50-41, good for a half-game lead over Boston and Baltimore (both currently at 50-42). The Yankees, whose 11-19 start was their worst since 1966, were nine games back after play on May 7.

It remains to be seen whether the Yankees can hold onto their lead and for how long if they manage to do so. With the All-Star Break just recently finished and the pennant races starting to heat up, the second half of the 2005 Major League Baseball season just got a whole lot more interesting.
