South takes Junior League softball Series title
The gloves flew high into the warm air at Everest Park as the South team gathered and danced. A long trip -- more than 3,100 miles from home in Lake Wales, Fla. -- proved fruitful for the South representatives as they defeated Southwest 4-0 to claim the Junior League Softball World Series championship Saturday.
After Friday night`s game against the East team from Milton, Pa., was suspended because of darkness, it was continued at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with South eventually capitalizing on an East error to claim a 1-0 victory in 12 innings.
Junior Softball World Series media relations director Peter Speer said ESPN is interested in broadcasting the tournament next year. "It comes up every year generally about this time," he said. "We offered to meet with them...they have to evaluate access and the field. I have no idea what their decision will be." Speer said it`s likely that ESPN 2, which broadcasts the 11-12-year-old softball equivalent in Portland, Ore., would pick up the games rather than ESPN.
