Fourteenth hole popular at Bears Canyon

Fans are splayed all along the outskirts of the 14th. Grandstands are perched on a hill by the tee, and there",s a snack bar on a concrete path just off the green. The grandstand grumbles, a running commentary, an audible longing, uncouth prodding. The threesomes passing through have their own loyal followings, but these are easily lost among the fans of the 14th.

The 448-yard par-4 hole, dubbed Bear`s Canyon for the Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus, coils around a conifer-stuffed ravine and drops 80 feet from the tee to the green. But that isn`t what compels fans to station themselves for hours at a time along the 14th. They come to see some brave soul plop one on the green -- or at least try.

Most of the 78 players have been dissuaded from an aggressive approach to the green thanks to a malicious 14-foot deep bunker that lies just to the right. It plays two parts sand trap and one part abyss. Just ask fan favorite Peter Jacobsen, who suffered a minor derailment in Round 1 because of it.
