Seattle Mariners letting Spiezio go
The Seattle Mariners have asked waivers on infielder Scott Spiezio for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release. Spiezio, 32 (turns 33 Sept. 21), hit .064 (3 for 47) with one home run and one RBI in 29 games for Seattle this season. Spiezio was 3 for 14 as a pinch-hitter with one home run and one RBI.
The switch-hitting Spiezio missed 62 games from April 20-July 1 with a strained left oblique muscle. He was 3 for 30 batting left-handed this season, 0 for 17 right-handed.
Seattle signed Spiezio as a free agent on Dec. 17, 2003. He batted a combined .198 (82 for 414) with 13 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 42 RBIs in two seasons (141 games) with the Mariners.
