Rene Preval has been sworn in as president of Haiti. He took the oath of office before some 300 legislators and foreign dignitaries, including Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Preval ruled Haiti from 1996 to 2001. Haiti has been no stranger to strife in recent years.

Tens of thousands of angry protesters erected flaming barricades, stormed a luxury hotel and marched through the streets of Haiti, protesting presidential election returns showing that frontrunner Rene Preval may face a runoff election. At least one supporter of Preval was killed.
