Health savings account gaining more popularity

More and more taxpaying US citizens choose the tax advantaged savings account solution of the Health Savings Account (HSA). This medical coverage plan was first on offer by insurance companies less then four years ago and is gaining considerable popularity each passing year. A health savings account provides low-cost, high-deductible health insurance policies with pre-tax accounts to pay for daily health care expenses. This solution encouraged by republicans, became an integral part to the president`s vision of a health care plan which is "affordable and available".

Naturally some reports were critical pointing at the harmful effects of such consumer driven health care plans. The Democrat`s in control in congress helped cool the initial enthusiasm of a private health insurance as a health savings account for selected citizens. Also, many Americans are not satisfied with such Health savings accounts once granted. Some prefer to switch to traditional plans as the Health saving account seems incredibly complicated. In fact, the initial response to health savings account plans may be so overwhelming that some companies even offer to help smooth the not so simple transition. One airline company offering this type of insurance even held meetings and offered health coaches for that reason.

However, leading insurance providers present some overwhelming figures in the past year. William Boyles, publisher of the Consumer Driven Market Report, estimated that enrollment in Health Savings Account type plans Since January 2006 more than doubled itself. This may be explained by the fact that the number of employers offering the health savings account coverage doubled from 2005 to 2006 and the support gained by financial institutions has tripled. Health savings accounts certainly aid in reducing national health spending but it`s still got a long way to go.
