Kelis Charged With Disorderly Conduct

Kelis Rogers-Jones, better known simply as Kelis, was arrested last Friday in Miami`s South Beach district early Friday after screaming racial remarks at two prostitutes?who turned out to be undercover female cops running a sting operation. The popular singer and songwriter, which is also a Grammy Award-nominated, was taken into custody at 4:30am, and booked on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence. She was hauled off to Miami-Dade County Jail and released on $1,500 bond hours later.

According to the police report, "her actions caused people walking by to stop and form a crowd. In addition, the sidewalk was blocked by the disturbance, causing people to walk in the street and even the traffic was stopped". Until this moment, Kelis` publicist Tracy Nguyen would not comment on the arrest, or on any other issue concerning this embarrassing incident.

Kelis, 27 years ago, was born and raised in Harlem, New York, sang as a child in church choirs and played violin, piano and saxophone. Her big breakthrough came in 2003, when she released her third album, Tasty, which went gold, selling more than 520,000 copies and spawned club hits, such as "Milkshake" and "Not in Love". Nevertheless, her fourth and last album until now, Kelis Was Here was released on August 22, 2006, and debuted and peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200. Despite the top ten debut, the album has only sold 126,000 copies in the United States as of November 2006.
