Spaceballs Reloaded
It has been discussed some months ago, but now that Mel Brooks has the `Producers` out of his busy schedule, it looks like the idea to move the hit 1987 flick `Spaceballs` to an animated version is starting to get into gear. For those who missed out on the mother of all sci-fi spoofs, `Spaceballs` mocked various science fiction blockbusters in a significant 1980`s style, and was viewed back then, as it still is now, as a genre that demands somewhat of an acquired taste.
The movie is being transformed and sent to the small screen via a three way project involving Brooks, MGM TV and a little known German company which goes by the name of Berliner Film Co. The German company actually pitched the idea to the producer some months ago, and MGM, who owns the rights to the original movie, is in on the venture.
The basic idea for the new animated `Spaceballs` is to poke fun at the newer sci-fi movies, including the `Star Wars` Prequels and `The Lord of the Rings` in a typical Mel Brooks fashion. The animated series is set to debut on cable network G4 in fall 2007. Production has already started on an initial batch of 13 episodes.
