Race Divides Tribes in `Survivor`
Rumors have been flying about the upcoming season of reality series "Survivor", ever since last month, when Survivor producers announced that the 20 contestants would be divided along racial lines into four tribes: black, white, Hispanic and Asian. Many are saying this is a publicity stunt, and the National Association for the advancement of Colored people (NAACP), who opposes this concept, might be buying into NBC`s game.
The NAACP has stated that it is reserving judgment on the show until it is aired, after it monitors public response. Mark Burnett, Executive producer of the show, responded to the NAACP and said that he encourages anyone to follow this lead and watch at least a few episodes to get a clear picture of how the dynamic between the tribes will play out.
The NAACP added that the attention given to "Survivor" is distracting from what the group deems to be bigger, more crucial issues, including what it called the "woeful lack" of minority creative executives and show runners along with the "stereotypical and biased" portrayal of minorities in news coverage and the lack of comedy series on the Big Four networks that feature a black lead character.
