Borat a hit at Toronto Film Festival
It was opening night at the Toronto film festival, and Sasha Baron Cohen`s soon to be hit film `Borat` was scheduled for a midnight screening. The red carpet was ready for the stars and their limousines rides, but only Cohen had to make a spectacle. He was indeed expected to make a grand entrance, but still took many by surprise when he arrived dressed as Borat the Kazakh reporter, on a wagon pulled by four women dressed as peasants. As if this wasn?t enough, he had a donkey ride alongside him in the wagon. Many in the entertainment industry had been awaiting the film`s release and expected an extra helping of comedy from start to finish, but due to technical problems, there was a start, but no finish.
20 minutes into the film, the projector malfunctioned, prematurely cutting the wall to wall roars of laughter the screening received. Even Filmmaker Michael Moore who was on the scene could not help fix the faulty projector. Cohen got up, and in front of the whole crown apologized on behalf of the government of Kazakhstan, in the voice of Borat of course. The Kazakhstan government has been a favorite subject with Borat and he continues to test his and their limits, even though he was threatened with a lawsuit earlier this year by Kazakh officials upset with his portrayal of the country as a nation of drunks, racists and sexists.
Cohen has been wringing every last laugh from the character he developed as part of his TV hit "Da Ali G Show." The comedian has ruffled more than a few feathers this year with Borat, a naive journalist he unleashes upon unsuspecting real-life subjects unprepared for the character`s overt sexism and anti-Semitism. The film is set to be released on November 3rd, don?t miss it.
