Musical Celebrate Record Breaking Anniversary
The hit musical "Les Mis?rables" has surpassed "Cats", as the longest running musical worldwide and now holds the world record in that category, as it marks the 21st anniversary of its October 1985 debut. Back then the musical`s debut took place at the Barbican theatre in London, and till this day, it continues to draw crowds at its current locale, the Queen`s in the city`s West End.
The musical, which is based on an 1862 novel by Victor Hugo and set in post-Napoleonic France, has played in 38 countries, has been seen by 54 million people worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages. It seems as if the public just cannot get enough of the show, some more than others, take Sally Frith for instance.
This "Les Mis?rables" fan planned to celebrate the show`s anniversary in London by seeing it for the 739th and 740th times. She first saw the show 18 years ago, became hooked on it and since then has spent around $56,000 including food, travel and hotels. She plans to stay loyal to the show as long as it is available, even though ticket prices have quadrupled since the first time she saw it.
