Top Of The Pop Is With Us For The Last Time
The last show of Top Of The Pops is about to be broadcasted on BBC Two on July 30. The veteran disc-jockey Sir Jimmy Savile, 79, will co-host the show. The long-running entertainment program`s swansong will also include such former presenters of it as Janice Long, Tony Blackburn and Mike Read. The final show will include celebrity tributes and archive footage. The show will end with "a celebration of the program`s glorious history featuring many of the greatest performances", a BBC spokesperson said. Many entertainment stars will participate in this very last show - the Spice Girls, Wham, Madonna, Beyonce Knowles and Robbie Williams, as well as the Rolling Stones - the very first band that appeared on Top of the Pops.
In the end of the show this week`s number one single will be announced, the way it`s always been. The problem that is rising, however, is as the program is being recorded in advance and there is no clear candidate for the top slot. Among the potential number one artists are Shakira, Rhianna, Lily Allen and Kasabian. At the moment, according to the music and entertainment industry experts, it seems like Shakira is going to hit number one. However nothing is final yet.
Sir Jimmy is incredibly happy to co-host the last show, and very proud that the program had lasted for 42 years. He said the last edition would be "a one-hour spectacular" featuring "high spots" from the past four decades. The first entertainment show of Top Of The Pop, presented by Sir Jimmy, featured the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, the Dave Clark Five and the Beatles, and was broadcasted on New Year`s Day 1964, from a converted church in Manchester.
