Commercial Star Finds Destined Role
Some actors are destined to act in Hollywood. Others, on the stage. And then there are some who were destined to act in commercials! Sondra Lowell calls a series of Tilex bathroom cleaner commercials `the role I was born to play.`
`People think commercial acting isn`t art because it`s in the service of a product. They forget that these products solve problems and the characters have to work through their problems every bit as much as Romeo and Juliet do. The star-crossed lovers have five acts to fall in love, be forced apart and die. We have only a few seconds to see the mold, deny that it`s there and build to an ear-splitting cry for a cleanser that will save us.`
`It?s what we actors call sense memory,` explained the veteran of pizza/cereal/chocolate that melts in your mouth not your hands commercials. `The copy called for a sudden realization that, yes, I do have mold in my bathroom, and instantly I was transported back to the previous summer, when I experienced that very emotion. You can?t fake a thing like that, and I knew the role was mine.`
