New Novel Tells Us Not to Give Up Hope
Emmerson G. Donald`s `The Story of My Life` is a new novel about hope. The story of child abuse and survival is told in such startling prose in this book. Donald brings the reader face-to-face with the most cruel forms of physical and emotional abuse, from the idyllic, protected origins of infancy to the brutal beatings of childhood and adolescence.
Reared amid the warmth of mother and extended family, Donald was innocent to what awaited him. When he was sent to live with his father and stepmother, it was tantamount to being sent into hell. Despite the beatings and the starvation, this young man found the strength to focus on his education and excel. When the physical and emotional torture became too much to bear, his academic performance deteriorated and he slipped into a severe state of depression. It isn`t until later, when he reunites with his mother and she finally learns the truth about her son`s ordeal, that he is able to escape the abuse. After she explains why she abandoned him, and he reveals his visible and frightening scars, mother and son are able to come to terms with their individual ordeals and create a bond that sustains Emmerson into adulthood.
It is with maturity and his mother`s support that he finds his way and becomes the successful man he always believed he could be. The Story of My Life transcends an autobiography of abuse, it holds out hope to those who have ever experienced childhood traumas and question their ability to live a normal and fulfilling life as a result.
