Babel Leading Nominee in Golden Globe Awards
The movie Babel, dealing with intercultural differences, is the leading candidate for the Golden Globe Awards, it was announced Wednesday. The movie received 7 nominations including nominations for best drama and best acting awards. The chilling crime thriller, The Departed received 6 nominations and Dreamgirls received 5 nominations. The Golden Globe awards split the best movie category to best drama and best comedy or musical. In the second category Borat was nominated and so was its star Sacha Baron Cohen for best actor in a comedy.
Both Mel Gibson`s Apocalypto and Clint Eastwood`s Letters From Iwo Jima are nominated for best foreign film. Due to the awards rules these films could only be nominated for best foreign film and not in the other more lucrative categories due to their language. Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated twice for best actor for Blood Diamond and The Departed and Clint Eastwood will also be competing against himself in the best director category for Flags of Our Fathers` and Letters From Iwo Jima. Helen Mirren was nominated for three best actress awards spread over the movie and TV categories for The Queen and television miniseries Elizabeth I and Prime Suspect: The Final Act.
The winners of the Golden Globe are selected each year by 90 members of the Hollywood foreign press. The prize is generally considered a good indicator for the Academy Awards. The 64th Golden Globe Award Ceremony will take place January 15, a month and a half before the Academy Awards which will be given out on February 25.
