Entertainment Industry Items Go under the Hammer
It seems that there is no limit to what some people will go to own a little piece of stardom. In several auctions around the United States last week, some items were sold well above the estimated value, with some even reaching six times more than what the auction companies anticipated. Among the items sold was a black Givenchy dress, worn by Audrey Hepburn and a guitar owned by Jimi Hendrix.
When Hepburn donned the Givenchy gown in her famous movie, ?Breakfast at Tiffany?s?, as the character Holly Golightly, she caused a sensation. However, nobody expected the price of the dress to reach a staggering $802,000 when it went under the hammer at Christie?s auction house. This amount was six times more than the highest presale estimate. The dress was expected to sell for between $98,000 and $138,000. All proceeds from the sale will go to ?The City of Joy Aid? that helps the poor in India.
In a separate auction, music lovers bid fast and furiously to get their hands on several attractive items up for sale ? including a custom made guitar that belonged to legendary singer, Jimi Hendrix and handwritten lyrics by Paul McCartney for his song, ?Maxwell?s Silver Hammer?. While McCartney?s song disappointed the auction house by going for less than the presale estimates, the guitar fetched $168,000 ? much higher than the expected $80,000 - $120,000 price range.
