Madonna Faces Tough Adoption Fight

Things have not been smooth sailing for pop star, Madonna, since she decided to adopt a baby from Malawi. Thinking that she was doing a good deed and possibly leading the way for other celebrities to adopt underprivileged African children, Madonna went to Malawi to see first hand how her Raising Malawi charity donations are spent, and also to adopt an infant boy. However, as the old saying goes: The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

After Madonna announced that she intended to adopt one-year-old David, who had spent his entire life in an orphanage since his mother died at his birth, Madonna was faced with the first hurdle. The sudden appearance of the boy?s father on the scene complicated matters when Madonna tried to take the child out of the country, contrary to Malawi laws that state that the child needed to watched by local authorities for an 18 month period in the star?s home before she could formerly adopt him. The child?s father first stated that the conditions of the adoption were not made clear to him, but then retracted his statement.

The star?s most recent hurdle comes in the face of a challenge against the adoption by a coalition of 67 human rights groups. The challenge claims that Madonna?s speedy adoption process went against Malawian law that non-residents could not adopt local children. The challenge will now be settled in court and Madonna faces a tough battle in the months ahead to raise David as her own child.
