English TV Programs Tops at Annual Emmy Awards

The English television industry came out proud at the recent international Emmy Awards that honors the best TV shows and documentaries of the year. The Awards, which were held in the Grand Ballroom of New York?s Hilton Hotel, saw British productions been nominated in nine Emmy categories, with winners in several of these including best drama series, best actor and best children?s category.

The stage was set for the honoring of television series produced outside the United States by Awards host, Graham Norton, an Irish comedian. As the results of the Emmys were announced, it was clearly seen that the British played a major part in the producing of quality television shows. A BBC research production on Hiroshima, won Best Documentary award. The Best Drama award with ?Life on Mars? and the Best Comedy Award went to ?Little Britain?. The Best Actor award (for his role in ?Vincent?) went to Ray Winston, whose actress daughter, Jamie, accepted on his behalf.

Steven Spielberg was given a special award in honor of his contribution to television. Spielberg urged the industry to be especially vigilant about maintaining high quality in ?the box? and expressed concern over inappropriate content that was so common in television shows, especially those originating in the United States. "We need to be responsible and careful about what we put into that box because what comes out the other end truly has changed the world," Spielberg said.
