The protagonist, Jason Birdsong, is a young lawyer who drives from his home in Philadelphia to Montgomery, Alabama, to bring his aged grandfather back up North. For the first time in his life he experiences the horrors of African-American life in the South: lynchings, cross burnings, segregated schools, restrooms, drinking fountains, elevators, restaurants and public transportation. He was on the bus with Rosa Parks when she was arrested for refusing to give her seat to a white man.
Finally, Jason, his new wife and his grandfather make it back to the North where Jason discovers that discrimination against Blacks, while more subtle than that in the South, is a reality of life in the North as well. This is a revealing and touching story which will surely be at the top of the best-seller lists.
