Spinach E. Coli Outbreak in U.S.

The nationwide recall for and warning against buying packaged spinach in the United States, due to an outbreak of E. coli-related illnesses in at least eight states before last weekend, with one death reported before Ohio and Kentucky, which brought to ten the number of states affected. Food and Drug Administration officials believe that the potentially deadly spinach might have been grown in California. A spokeswoman for the United Fresh Produce Association said ?Our industry is very concerned. We`re taking this very seriously.?

In many cases, E. coli causes diarrhea, often accompanied by bloody stools. Most healthy adults can recover completely from E. coli poisoning within a week, although some people ?such as the old, infirm, or young ? will sometimes develop a form of kidney failure thanks to E. coli which brings with it the possibility of death.

Health officials are warning that washing the packaged spinach will not be enough, as the contamination level goes pretty deep. While FDA standards are already incredibly high, one spokesman for the organization stated ?We need to strive to do even better, so that even one life is not lost? in the future.
