Landscaping business turns away gay customers in Houston
When Michael Lord and Gary Lackey phoned up the Garden Guy company co-owned by Sabrina and Todd Faber, they did not suspect that they were contacting an openly anti-gay company. During the call, apparently there was no sign of discriminating behavior. But when Michael Lord received an email by Ms Faber a few hours later explaining that the company preferred not to work with them because of their sexual orientation, he was stunned.
Being completely taken aback, he quickly forwarded the mail to many of his friends, and the mail started to make the rounds all over the Internet.
Within a short time, the Fabers of the Garden Guy company for flooded with offended and offensive emails and telephone calls. A cry of outrage went through the gay community of Houston, a city known for its tolerance towards homosexual couples in the last years. A gay rights activist Carol Wyatt stated that more than being surprised by the homophobic behavior, she was saddened that it was deemed to be socially acceptable enough by Ms Faber to voice her opinions openly in an email.
But along with the criticism came messages of support from like minded Christians and anyone believing in a small businesses right to pick and choose its customers. Fact is that had the gay couple visited the company`s web page they would have been able to read that the company was disapproving of gay relationships. So far into the argument, the Garden Guy has not had to regret its stance: Sabrina Faber recently announced that the affair had led to the acquisition of many new customers, all in total worth an additional $40,000.
