United Airlines Cutting Jobs by 1,000
In an effort to reduce costs in the face of high oil prices and bankruptcy needs, United Airlines CEO Glenn Tilton stated this week that the airline company plans to eliminate at least 1,000 salaried and management jobs by the end of 2006. Even after completing its three year bankruptcy restructuring, United Airlines stated that its costs were simply just still too high. Other airlines, including Delta, recently filed for bankruptcy in the United States.
According to United?s CEO Tilton, ?We?re going to reduce our costs further, we`re going to take full advantage of the network that we have preserved to optimize our revenue, and we are going to deliver to our customers a consistently superior and consistently improving customer experience.? United also plans to reduce purchase services by about $200 million, with plans to cut a further $60 million from the airline?s advertising and marketing budget.
United Airlines is one of America?s busiest airline companies, two United planes were hijacked by Islamic terrorists during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. United recently got something ? either a boost or a kick ? by the Paul Greengrass movie ?United 93?, which documented in movie form the last minutes of United Flight 93 on September 11, the flight where passengers rose up against their Muslim hijackers after having learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City as well as the Pentagon outside of Washington, D.C.
