888 Chief Predicts Uncertain Times for Online Casino Industry

Recent statements from 888 chief John Anderson have caused many in the online casino industry to recall similar pessimistic remarks from ex-Party Gaming chief Richard Segal. The industry was rocked in 2005 by Segal?s statements predicting an uncertain future for online casino gaming ? and now some say Anderson?s could have the same effect. In 2005, Segal?s comments were blamed for causing share prices in the online casino industry to plummet.

Some analysts are now wondering if the prevailing mood in the industry will deter potential investors and cause the usually dynamic online casino industry to temporarily slump. In an interview with the UK Financial Times last week, John Anderson made several pessimistic remarks on the future of the online casino industry, which were widely reported by international media. Among his comments was one indicating that the online casino poker bubble is destined to burst and that the numbers of new casino players signing up with gaming companies is unsustainable in the future.

While Anderson?s views have predictably caused concern, there are those who have been quick to speak out in opposition to his views. PKR?s marketing director, Simon Prodger, has issued a statement advising that although exponential growth in online casino poker would be rare, there remain healthy growth rates in all markets which could last for years. Several analysts have also pointed out that Anderson?s comments directly contradict those he made earlier in September 2005, when he advised that his firm?s reliance on the U.S. market was low.
