American First Fair Trade Towns

On Saturday, July 8, 2006, Media Borough Councilwoman Monica Simpson and Idyll Development Foundation Director Hal Taussig announced at a public ceremony in the center of town, that Media, Pennsylvania, is the ?First Fair Trade Town in the US.? Business leaders in Media, which is likely a town that few people have ever heard of outside of it, have been positive about the initiative to turn their city into a trade fair hub.

One business leader in Media, who runs a prominent business in the town, says "I support Fair Trade because it is the right thing to do. It is the same reason I ride a bike to work, conserve resources, support organic agriculture and my local economy. There are many, many people that have to share our world."

That someone in a small town that nobody has heard of, like Media, Pennsylvania, feels confident in saying that "I was extremely lucky to have been born into a life of incredible affluence with a house, car, abundant food, education and time for recreation. I feel compelled to do what I can to help make this world a better place for everyone," should be heartening for those throughout the United States who wish to turn their own cities into "the first fair trade capital of the world."
