The Benefits of Summer Jobs
Summer time is a time for fun in the sun, relaxing on the beach, family vacations and, if you?re lucky, no studying. However, summer time is also the time for many high school and college students to work and save up money for the fall. Restaurants and retail stores can in summer be found to be largely staffed by students on their break. This situation can lead to frequent turnover for businesses, as in the fall students leave, over the short winter break others come back, go back to school, and then seek jobs again in May or June. What are the benefits of a summer job and why do so many parents insist that their children get one for even just a few months during this time of year?
The easiest answer is that having a job should is way for kids to be out of their parents hair. Of course, these parents love their kids. Don?t misunderstand ? but kids sitting around the house all day on Saturday, and then sleeping all day on Sunday, is not the sort of activity that many parents like their children to develop. But what parents do want their kids to develop is a sense of responsibility, both personal and financial.
The requirements of having a job ? wearing a uniform, getting to work on time, and so on ? demand that teenagers of a legal working age develop the skills they need to do the same thing in college. Sure, they have to be on time to high school, but college-age student workers might appreciate having had a job in the past because it prepared them a bit for the demands of university life. Also, having a paycheck coming in means parents can save up some money for their son?s or daughter?s university studies. An added benefit is that kids receiving a paycheck every two weeks, and learning about responsible saving practices, might be better equipped to deal with financial issues when they are older.
