Mail Still Being Sent to World Trade Center

More than five years have passed and mail is still being sent to the World Trade Center. Most of the mail is "junk mail", those pamphlets that usually find there way to the trash bin without much thought. But the address that appears on these letters just doesn`t exist in reality, and in most cases the recipients are no longer alive, as they have been killed at the deadly attack of September 11. Hundreds of letters addressed to companies and offices in the World Trade Center arrive every day to the post office across the road from "Ground Zero". Telephone bills, wine club announcements, college alumni newsletters and even tax returns and checks from government agencies fill mail sacks in the post office, all with the same zip code 10048 reserved fro the two, now gone, towers.

Among those who send these letters are major American institutions and companies. The source of the mistake is usually establishments failing to update there mailing lists. Seprina Jones-Sims, who handles the trade center mail said: "I guess sooner or later they`ll realize the towers aren`t back up. I don`t know when."

Some of the companies, who used to populate the World Trade Center, paid the US Postal Service to hold on to the letters, and a currier arrives from time to time to pick the letters up. Some of the letters are forwarded to the company`s new offices, while others are sent back to sender. A portion of the letters received are sent to a recycling center in Brooklyn, where they are turned into recycled paper or cardboard.
