Tampa Tribune`s Gil Thelen Announces Retirement


The publisher and president of The Tampa Tribune announced Tuesday that he will retire on June 30. Gil Thelen, has been at the Tribune since August 2003, but said he now wants to pursue other work. Thelen, who has been on staff at the Tribune since 1998 where he first served as vice president and executive editor, said in a release he wanted to spend more time with his children and his wife.

Thelen also said that he would like to work more in a freelance capacity to help in multimedia content and culture as well as the organizational structures for companies, according to newspaper trade publication Editor and Publisher. Gil Thelen`s career spans 45 years, primarily through the Knight Ridder newspaper group.

Before joining Media General, he was vice president and executive editor of The State, a daily newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina. The successor to Thelen will be the fourth publisher the Tribune has had in the last five years. John Schueler, president of the Florida Communications Group, said an immediate search for a new publisher will begin soon.
