Southwest Airlines Returns to Denver

Southwest Airlines will resume service in Denver next year. The move, though welcome by passengers seeking lower fares, poses more problems for struggling carriers. Denver`s high costs kept Southwest from serving the state of Colorado for two decades.

The Dallas-based carrier decided to return in the midst of an expansion. The cut-rate carrier will compete against bankrupt Delta, United Airlines, which is emerging from bankruptcy, and against Denver-based Frontier Airlines.

High fuel prices recently caused airlines to cancel some routes, but many while doing so have paradoxically added new routes as well. Information on price and times flights begin are scheduled to be released next week for Southwest`s return to Colorado.
