FedEx charged with discrimination
A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday certified a class-action discrimination lawsuit targeting FedEx Corporation amid allegations, spread out in a case including almost 10,000 current and former workers as well as 1,000 low-level management employees in 14 states, that the delivery service paid thousands of current and former minority employees less than their white counterparts, skipped them for promotions and gave them poor work evaluations.
Jim McCluskey, a FedEx spokesman, said the Memphis, Tennessee-based company was considering appealing the ruling, which the company called a "procedural decision" that does not address the case`s merits. "We are confident that when the merits of the case are considered, it will be shown that the plaintiffs were not treated differently because of their race or ethnicity," he said.
Discrimination in the United States against minority employees has long been a struggle which in recent years thanks to past legislation and the efforts of volunteer organizations has seen many victories for equal treatment of all workers, whatever their race, religion, or national origin.
